Arcis sur Aube to Merry sur Yonne

 Wednesday 17th August

Today we moved on a few miles further, but we had a short walk around the village of Villers Franqueux and it's vineyards before we left.  


Found a geo by the church too.

We arrived at Arcis sur Aube mid-afternoon in blazing sunshine and felt it was too hot to stay at the planned Camping-Car Park as it was very open with no trees, so we went to Camping de l'Ille Charlieu instead and settled under several shady trees.  The site is an island in the River Aube.

Later we walked over the bridge to have a look about the small town.




Thursday 18th August

A brisk morning walk to buy our baguette (and pain au chocolates for the boys) then a scenic drive to our favourite campsite in France - Camping Merry sur Yonne, Burgundy.  We are delighted to be introducing Merry to Graham and despite the lack of sunshine, he is very happy so far.  As this is the fourth time we've been, we were keen to know that the two chaps, David and Zak who re-developed the site after 8 years of neglect, were still here.  They are - and once we were settled in on our pitches, Zak came by to welcome us back and have quite a long chat, despite the fact that he needed to get back into the kitchen.  He is the chef for the restaurant and had a busy evening ahead of him.  

The grass around us is very parched like home, but here it's covered with dried leaves too.

Ever since we first came here in 2016, there's been a seat with just one plank to sit on rather than 2 - now it doesn't look at all comfortable!!  (The people with the 2 tents surrounding the seat were out at the time...)

This evening we've been for a stroll down to the riverside to marvel at the rocky cliffs and the still waters of the River Yonne.  (Will take these pics again in the sunshine on another day - we are here till Monday.)

Camping le Picard, Tournieres

 Not so much to report today as we spent the morning 'at home' doing a few jobs, reading and puzzling.  Quite glad we did the day this way round as we had a very heavy shower during the morning.  But after lunch the sky cleared and we set off for a little walk along the lanes.   We picked up 2 large cooking apples from outside someone's garden and then John climbed onto a grassy bank to pick a few blackberries.  Pudding sorted. This black cloud passed us by. So the sun was still shining when we got back to our campsite. Near the entrance is a small lake and an English chap we'd met earlier in the day, asked us to urgently  get his wife to bring his phone.  He needed a camera to record the huge carp he'd been hanging on to for 15 minutes! Villedieu-les-Poeles to Donville-les-Bains (Camping de l'Ermitage)

 Friday 2nd September After a very noisy rainy night and a very overcast morning we left Villedieu and drove west to the coast of the Baie de St. Michel and into this campsite with no sign of any rain.  It's quite a large site with some very hilly pitches, but we found a lovely spot at the bottom of the hill.  We have to walk out of the site to get to the beach, but it is very unspoilt and has super views in both directions. Looking towards Granville.  NB we walk to the far tip on the right tomorrow!! Looking north up the Cherbourg peninsular. Dishing up dinner. Saturday 3rd September Today began overcast, but soon warmed up and we set off for our long walk to the Pointe du Roc beyond the old town of Granville.  We began at sea level past these pristine beach huts. Soon coming around the bay, up steep paths and steps. A clever geocache en route.  The stone block had a hole through it with the black and white tube beyond reach.  But John quickly spotted...

First stop - French journey 2022 - Boiry-Notre-Dame

 Left home yesterday afternoon with our long-time friend Graham following on in his VW van.  Without too much traffic trouble, we reached Canterbury and parked up at the Park&Ride for the night.  Had a short walk, found a geocache, had dinner and then spent the rest of the evening catching up with Graham's middle daughter, Clare who lives in the city.  Lovely to see you after so long, Clare.   Up early this morning and off to Dover port, joined the queue for passport control.  No other checks, so soon ready to board the 8.30 DFDS ferry, then out onto the empty French motorway.  We stopped near Ardres for some shopping and (much cheaper) fuel and came to Camping La Paille Haute near Arras.  Third time for us to stop off here - quite a pleasant site in a sleepy little village.
